Virginia Trails Xmas Fun Ride

Hi All,

Just a short note to say that we appreciate your support at Virginia Trails.

The MTB venue and trails are open 24/7. All you need do is make a booking at bookings@virginiafarm.co.za . We now have a parking area, ablutions, showers, a bike wash and a place for you to relax after your ride! We have some 65kms of awesome trials with a number of options suitable for the professional right through to the beginner.
This month we will be opening a further two new trails, the Forest Loop and the Strelitzia Plunge (2 more technical and testing routes).

We want to keep the farm feel and make your visit as exciting and relaxing as possible. The first night riders have tested the trails with our reflective markers and said it was fantastic. Why don't you get-together a group of friends for a late afternoon ride, a braai, followed by a night ride? This is also a perfect venue for a Corporate MTB Day or to stage your own Race or Event.

Summer is upon us with the heat and rain being a factor to consider. By booking we will be able to inform you if conditions are not good for riding on the day.
Consider riding much earlier now or later after 3.00pm to escape the heat.

Virginia Trails will continue to operate the honesty box system. A day permit still remains at R20 a bike. Shortly we will have to increase the price to cover our costs with the additional facilities we now have available for you.

Please pencil in the "Virginia Trails Xmas Fun Ride" on the Sunday 4th December 2011. We had fantastic support at last years event with 420 MTBikers participating.
(See poster Attached - Race info on website and ROAG)

We look forward to seeing you at Virginia Trails soon.

Regards
Pete

Bashers news

The annual Lake Eland Classic took place on Sunday 30th October. It was very well supported by our local riders aswell as riders from Durban and Maritzburg.

The event catered for the entire family with a variety of races ranging from the 45km classic to the 5km fun ride. Riders were treated to some awesome single track riding and spectacular views. The weather also played its part by providing cool and dry conditions for all the riders.

It was so great to see families riding together and fathers riding with children on their first mountain bike race.
Well done to all the local mountain bikers and bundu bashers who competed in this year’s event. A few of our talented young riders produced some excellent results, considering the large and competitive field that rode on the day. Congratulations to local rider Justin Porteous for finishing 2nd overall in the 45km classic.

A special well done to the Lake Eland event committee and Lake Eland Game Reserve for putting together a fantastic weekend event. We look forward to next year.

A large group of local mountain bikers competed in the berg and bush on this same weekend. The berg and bush was a 3 day stage event from 28th to 30th October. Well done to all the bundu bashers who competed and conquered this year’s berg and bush, showing tremendous strength and endurance.
And congratulations to Darren Purtell and Hayley Smith for finishing 4th in the mixed men and women category! This is an excellent result for these two young riders as they were up against some stiff competition. Well done and we’re proud of you!

Just a reminder of the Saturday morning rides from Dura Cycles, leaving at 06h30. All riders are welcome and all fitness levels are catered for between the fast, medium and social group. And join us for a friendly cup of coffee afterwards. Hope to see you all there.

Keep fit and ride hard! See you in the dirt…..smiling!

News

Last Friday 21st October was round 4 of the School Series MTB held at the Douglas Mitchell MTB track. The event was very well attended with just over 55 children from different schools on the South Coast, and a variety of age groups ranging from 5 to 16. Every child thoroughly enjoyed racing around the exciting 4km track, and after the event no one went away empty handed. A special well done to those talented young riders who finished first in their respective age groups.

Our next School Series event will take place on 18th November, at Douglas Mitchell from 14h00. This will be our last School Series event for the year.

Good luck to all those who will be competing in the MTB events at the Lake Eland Classic this weekend. Ride hard and have fun!

We would also like to wish some of our local riders all the best for the ‘Berg and Bush’ this weekend. There are quite a few locals who will be riding in this stage event.

A reminder that there will be no rides from Dura Cycles this Saturday morning, this is due to the Lake Eland weekend.

On sunday evening Darryn Purtell found a long legged jack russel running through the middle of Margate if anyone knows who the owner is or if they have seen it before please contact Darryn (082 454 8182)

Evan taken out by a hartebees

Mountain Biker, Evan van der Spuy of Team Jeep South Africa got taken out by a RED HARTEBEES at amountain bike race at Albert Falls Dam. Check out this crazy footage which was taken by team mate Travis Walker on his GoPro Camera - The BUCK sure does STOP HERE with Evan van der Spuy aka #BUCKNORRI

News

On Sunday, a group of local road riders arrived home after completing the mammoth journey from Johannesburg to Margate. The ProDeo Cycle Tour is 780km of riding over 5 days. This annual tour is done to fundraise for cancer and the ProDeo Care Group. Well done to those riders who not only conquered this physical challenge, but who gave up their time and effort to selflessly raise funds for a good cause! The Local riders who completed this year’s tour were: Bennie Kruger, Fred Van Zyl, Colin McKay, CJ Dressing, Robbie Cummings, Gerard Brierly, Grant Langley, and the rose amongst the thorns, Dura Cycles’ Heather Malan. Well done again to all of these brave riders.

Now onto some mountain biking news from the dirt. This weekend was full of mishaps, with a few of our local MTB riders involved in serious crashes. ‘Extreme downhill rider’ Grant Richardson, confirmed the laws of gravity as he lost control of his bike on a fast downhill and flew through the air at high speed. He made use of the tuck-and-roll technique, and is extremely lucky to only have a minor shoulder injury. Another crash happened this weekend at the multisport series event and involved one of the South Coast’s top riders, Evan van der Spuy. Evan was having a great ride, and while racing through the single track, a huge male Red Hartebees launched itself at Evan throwing him off his bike. Fortunately he only suffered a concussion and the x rays revealed no major damage. The whole crash was recorded from a rider behind Evan – this unbelievable footage is not something you see every day. We all wish both Grant and Evan a speedy recovery, and hope to see them back on their bikes soon. To watch Evan's run in with the Hartbees follow the link http://youtu.be/S2oymHHyV1M

Summer is now upon us, so we can look forward to some sunny mornings on the bike. The last couple of weeks there has been great turnouts at our local outrides. A reminder that we ride from Dura Cycles every Saturday morning at 6:30. All are welcome and all levels of fitness are catered for. There is a fast, medium and social group. Don’t miss out on some exciting MTB riding and some good laughs with likeminded mountain bikers. Join us for a cup of coffee afterwards. Don’t miss out and we’ll see you there.

Pro Deo - Day 3

We have just booked into the most stunning guest house in Nottingham Road, but before we got here some very hard work on the bicycle needed to be done.  The first stop, after leaving ATKV Drakensville, this morning was in Winterton for coffee.  Shortly after Escourt the climbing started with hills like Warthog and Griffin really hurting the tired legs.  At the top of Griffin’s hill we tested our mountain biking skills on some tricky dirt road (as they were working on the road), resulting in one flat tyre and two destroyed tyre’s.  After the repairs we enjoyed a lovely long downhill into Mooiriver for lunch.
After a long climb out of Mooirivier we completed the day with a fast undulating section to Nottingham Road. Tomorrow we will see the sea for the first time on the section from Nottingham Road to Toti.

Regards
Heather

Pro Deo Day - Two

After a really nice evening in Reitz last night we left in very cold weather (like ice on the cars) this morning for the ATKV Drakensville Resort.  We rode via Bethlehem to Clarens, where we stopped for lunch and then on through Golden GateGolden Gate has really got some awesome views and well, the hills of course.  It got really warm along the way but the wind play in our favour today.

Unfortunately, I have pick up a rather bad cold which makes the ride challenging to say the least but the guys have been really great at helping and looking after me.  Now for some dinner and rest before we tackle what I have been told is the hardest day of the tour.

Regards
Heather

Any donations greatly appreciated http://www.doit4charity.org.za/fundraising/Heather.Malan

Pro Deo Day - One

Well who said the Free State is flat?  I guess a lot of it is flat which meant many hours of fast riding with a strong headwind and some very long, gradual climbs towards the end.  The one thing about the Free State is that you can see where you are going to be riding for kilometer ahead.  Not always sure this is a good thing.  The boys are very strong which put the pressure on but hey day 1 is done.  Fast Freddie, true to form had the first puncture, closely followed by two more but not Freddie this time.  Other than that all the bikes behaved themselves really well.  The first stop of the day was in Heilbron (some 70km into the ride) and then a 2nd stop just outside Petrus Steyn. Now for some relaxation and a braai at a very nice guest house in Reitz before we tackle day 2.

News

On Sunday 2nd October a few of our local bundu bashers took part in the Michael House MTB Super Classic, and produced some excellent results! Dominic De Bruin flew through the 20km course to claim 3rd place in the Sprogs age category, and 7th place overall.

In the 50km race, our very own Brandon Venter crossed the line in 9th place overall, but took the victory in the Youth age category. These are both outstanding results, considering the stiff competition that these two boys were up against. Well done and we’re proud of you! Well done to the other Bundu Bashers who competed in this MTB event, and a special well done to young Nicholas De Bruin for finishing his first 20km race! Congratulations to Natashka who came 1st overall!

Brian and his son Cale Lindecke took part in a road cycling event on Sunday 2nd – the Engen Dynamic Road Race at Moses Mabida Stadium in Durban. Cale did extremely well and won the U/12 category in the 20km race, while Brian showed his talent in completing the 100km race.

Just a reminder about the weekly rides.

Every Saturday morning from Dura Cycles at 06h30. Fast, medium and social group, all riders welcome. Join us for a friendly cup of coffee afterwards.

Dura Cycles own Heather Malan to cycle from Jhb - Mgt for charity

This year 5-9th October 2011 our very own Heather Malan will be joining Cycling friends to complete the 860 km trip from Johannesburg to Margate in KZN to raise money for the Pro Deo Care Group.

To survive the Pro Deo Care Group derives its funds from projects like the Cycling Tour and donations made by people attending the clinics, but the costs of goods and apparatus required is escalating yearly. Money raised has to be well managed and purchasing of wheelchairs, pulpit walkers, commodes, bath chairs, foot spa's, hearing aids, oxygen cylinders, special toilet seats, special mattresses and blood pressure apparatus is done with care so that funds are not used unnecessarily. Being elderly can, as we have said, be lonely and these people can feel that they have been forgotten.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be made by clicking on this link Doit4charity
