Karkloof Trail Blazer

Last weekend was the very popular Karkloof Trail Blazer up in Karkloof hills.  There has been a huge effort in the trails in the area and the track on offer has some of the best tricky single track SA Mountain biking has to offer.  The 45km was well represented and some great athletes were on the start line.  With a Gradual start up a farm road and into some awesome single track the pressure was starting to mount.  With Craig Paul leading us into the single track after hitting a corner a bit to quick took a dive but managed to land on his feet.  However, in a close second was Justin Porteous who after pushing a bit to hard slid out on a slippery corner and face planted a tree. Because it was still early on in the ride there was a large lead bunch so Justin had to fight his way back to the front, which he did and was able to out sprint Darryn Purtell to the line to take second place.  Darryn third and Evan Van Der Spuy 4th.  The hard training is paying off.  Well done Bundu's.

Saturday morning ride was great fun.  With the feverX MTB challenge just around the corner, we thought it would be a good idea to show the rider’s whats install for them, having rain the day before it was still pretty slippery and proved to be challenging on our awesome new single track.  Well done to the social group who has claimed victory over Thelma's hill.  The race is happening on the 19 December 2010.  You can enter on www.roag.co.za The  first 200 entries get a Feverx shirt as well as a Goody bag, so get your entries in to avoid disappointment.  This Thursday we will be having road time trial at Uvongo Pier at 4:15pm. Come and set a time to beat or try beat your previous time.

Saturday morning ride leaving Dura Cycles 6:30am.With no Road group there will still be the usual 3 MTB Groups.  Everyone welcome.

God Bless
Jono

Pro Deo Update - Stage 5

Well it is all over - the ride has been ridden and the goal achieved. Friendships have definitely been made and a unique sense of camaraderie and fellowship bound together by endless hours on the road.

Today's stage was quite emotional for me a I realized just how safely God had brought us through this challenging tour and fund raiser for Pro Deo. To be privileged to ride with great men who are willing to sacrifice time and body to such a worthy fund raiser. Guys you are warriors all. To all our families that woke up to alarms in the early morning hours  - to the Saturday morning 6 hour rides - you guys are tops.

Bennie and Elma - it is true that you guys are the heart beat and pulse of the Pro Deo Tour as you have been for the last ten year. Agnes keeping us safe from behind - you are an absolute honey. Brian you are the best sport of all - you took all that we threw at you and still
Smiled - Jono please change your next theme song or whistle it or hum it..... Anything ... But please don't sing it again. Freddy with a " y " enjoy the gardening bro - I'll wave as I ride past. Derick - our only man to tame the Generaal and fines master - how come Benny never got a fine. Robbie - well you were history after Blayre got on tour - but one of the last men standing - for a mountain biker you tried hard to get the roadies to think out the box - lekker ride bro. Colin ( with 1 L ) anytime you need to learn how to ride up front let me know - thanks for all the humour on tour- if it wasn't for you the road would definitely have felt longer. Lastly to easily the most determined rider of all Grantis you showed real courage out there these past few days you could easily have given up but hung on  - well done partner.

To all of you I am sure that this is the beginning of something and not the end, God Bless and keep you all and I pray that he reveals his true light and calling in your lives

Till next time

See you in the DIRT ... Smiling
Yip back on the mountain bikes
Soon.

Remember please don't stop your donations  - we will let you know the final amount raised by the end of next week.

Pro Deo Stage - 4 Update

Last night at the Nottingham Road Hotel was to say the least an experience !!
After finishing a tiring day we were subjected to an all night party that finally finished ... Well actually it didn't  - two jovial fellows were still adamant that they were seeing us off ... Apparently they were Fred's new found mates and bonus for Grant they found his compression socks .. Well basically sexy ...? Shows you what kind of condition they were in.
Never the less after they made us a glorious speech  ( and to their horror were pulled into out prayer ring ) they donned mops and brooms and saluted us on our way ( after the one mate had shoved the mop down the other mates left ear hole ) but non the less they were really awed by what we were doing.

Today was a cold start 11 degrees raining and a bit of a head wind - Generaal Bennie Kruger rattled down the hill .. The poor man has like a minus zero fat count .   Of course yours truly found the conditions more suitable ( mainly because I have a Zero lean count )
We were amazed at Robbie Cummings staying power as this morning one could see our entire descent from Joburg on the red maps on his eyes ( who needs a garmin)
We descended from Notties to Maritzborough at a really frenetic pace - it was at this time that I learnt that although Bennie calls himself the Generaal, Colin ( note the spelling with only 1 L ) McKay is actually the whole war office - intact he and fast Freddy Van Zyl declared themselves the couple of the day ( like who would want that title dude ) - one could read a lot into that statement.
From Maritzburg we headed out on the Amashovashova route and down Umlaas road ... And boy did everyone put the hammer down - man I think they thought we only had another 10 km to go not 90 ... !!!!
The prize of the day goes to Brian ( Wiggle.com) Lindecke who was popped at the post on a break away hill climb because he stopped to help a wheezing you know who ( but it was a ploy ) .. And poor old Brian fell for it.
Brian is a good sport and really takes a lot from us but a lekker chap to have on tour .. Go Lance.
Today seeing the ocean at the end of a 158 km was almost emotional as you know that your goal is now within sight.

Again I thank God almighty for the people that I a riding with, the privilege of being able to ride and for keeping us safe on the roads. Elma and Agnes you girls are more appreciated than you know - always smiling whilst trying to protect us from the traffic - I think us riders have the bargain end of the stick.

To those that read this message thanks for your interest and remember that it is not about us as individuals but your fellow man around you. If I can encourage you to change a life for someone and donate to Pro Deo - www.doit4charity.co.za

Till tomorrow see you in Shelly Beach .... With a huge smile

Pro Deo Update - Stage 3

I have no sense of humor or energy left in me - my first reaction to the thought of writing this brief for Face Book was  ...... I can't say publicly but you get the gist of what I mean. But now that I have showered and have a semblance of humour back let me tell the story as it is.

We set the alarms for 5.30 am though what for I will never know ... We were violently woken up by the sound of the flipping barnyard just outside our window. You know how serious it is when you a crooned to sleep by incessant frog croaking ( better than Grant snoring) ... But to be awakened by squawking ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys and a donkey that appeared under attack from Robby Cummings - the day should only improve from there. To you farmer Browns out there take a bow you are legends.

Back to the cycling ..... Our saddles and us are as one with the universe ... Back on the saddle again carefree and Arsette free as well family when  you greet us on Sunday do not be deceived by our modified triangular looking Adams Apple or our John Wayne swagger   - we have earned the right to prove what a bicycle seat can do - we are hardend nay dare I say tough, manna of the road  - seasoned saddle jockeys - weather beaten gladiators of the Tarmac - Bring it on Mel Gibson you have met your match with the Pro Deo team.
And what a team it is. My family wrote me a touching letter and in it was I quote " great memories and stories will be told , of laughter, comradery and how friendships can mould"
Today I saw this it was our toughest day yet - the most climbing we have done to date as well as temperatures exceeding 44 deg. It warms ones heart when you see a fellow cyclist struggling and all of a sudden out of the blue one of the team silently fall in beside him and gently help up the hills even though he himself is at maximum heart rate - SACRIFICE - that is what it is all about and I am proud to say that each and every person that I ride with on this tour has shown this each day . Boys I am proud to be doing this with you.

142 kilometers and Praise the Lord a sudden drop in temp and a bit of rain for the last 10 km saw us all safely home again at Nottingham Hill. Vasbyter of the day goes to a courageous Grant Richardson - partner I am proud of you, you had big B... ( you do the math) today.

Till tomorrow and again guys please keep your donations rolling, if we think it is tough out here on the road .... Imagine fighting for your quality of life - Pro Deo Care Group need people like you in the community ... Remember a lot of a little make a lot   - big or small it all counts

See you in the .... Whatever !!

Mark

Pro Deo Cycle Tour - STAGE 3

Today is the 3rd stage from ATKV to Nottingham Road Hotel - 124 km

Pro Deo Update - Stage 2

Whew what a day – We started out from Reitz in fairly cool weather a slight head wind – Turning out of the town and heading toward Kestrel we still thought that we were okay and to top it all the wind changed direction and tailed us. But boys being boys we had to edge faster and faster until Colin “ wee man “ Mckay gave a few vociferous expletives that toned the pace down.

Riding through the balance of the Free State was just as long and tedious as the day before…. Until we started heading into Kwa Zulu Natal territory.

One thing we have to admit is that we have beautiful mountains …. By car that is… boys try it on a two wheeler without a motor. Never the less we rode through some magnificent scenery and turned to ride along Sterkfontein Dam ….. which was fine until Benny and the boys decided that it was a race to the top of the twenty five kilometre hill … Ja Right Benny and co at 60 Kg … Yours truly at 108 Kg – Like this is a contest that was evenly matched …. Anyway with a heart rate of 105% we got to the top me two minutes behind Benny, Jono, and Brian the “ Lance Armstrong “ Lindecke (This bootjie can ride ne) … and everybody is asking why my eyes are blood shot !!!!!

Sadly fast Freddy Van Zyl could not look after his toys and broke his bike good and proper/….something that he had been trying to do since yesterday – shame the boy was bleak but kept us totally entertained by becoming Steven Spielberg for the rest of the trip.

Today’s stage was a mere 166km … bru it is tough, just imagine those tour de France boys … Eish

As I write I am overlooking the beautiful mountains of Natal and feel truly blessed that God has enabled me the physical capabilities to ride for this worthy cause …. Thanks again for all of your e mails, SMS’s and even more for your continued donations to help those more needy than us.

Till tomorrow see you in the dirt...err tar smiling

Mark

Pro Deo Cycle Tour - STAGE 2

Today is the 2nd stage of the Pro Deo Cycle Tour - from Reitz to ATKV Drakensville - 148 km.

Pro Deo Stage 1 Update

Last night Tuesday 5th October saw us all at Kevin Peyper's house AKA "The Big Show" and he lives up to his name, he is a man mountain and I thank the Lord that at least he was on our side - 6 foot 9 inches tall, 135 kg's, a booming jovial voice with a sense of humour and a heart to match.

Day 1 every one was up early but not necessarily bright, breakfast, a 45 min drive to Vereeninging and the day begun.  We paired off with riding partners on our trip to Reitz, I have never ridden a more straight road nor seen more dry grass or sand in my life...EVER... We cracked along at a pace of 30 km average a bit quicker than our normal 28 km an hour but everyone felt good, we had a tail wind behind us.  "Fast Freddy Van Zyl" had a number of tyre mishaps but we are all pretty gratefully for the rest we had each time he had a problem, infact it was almost as if the "Big Show" had organised the problems so that he could cool down in the 35 degree temperature.

The road was fairly undulating with a few climbs towards the end of the ride which sorted the men from the boys and the mountain bikers from the roadies.  Two mountain bikers and 1 roadie in the top 3 finishes...only joking we all finished together. Quite a few stories to tell about which blade of grass was greener than the next, ever the less we manage to create war stories where there are none to create.

Thanks to all those who continue to sponsor us as we ride.  Keep the donations coming, it does encourage us especially when receive your sms's and emails

Till tomorrow, see you in the dirt or tar smiling.

Mark and the Pro Deo Team.

A Nervous Hello

I cannot believe that we leave for the Pro Deo tour tomorrow, and that I am about to embark on one of the toughest events that I have ever undertaken ….. remember that I will be keeping you up to date on Face Book or via e mail as I progress.

Training has been long and tough and many a morning I pondered as to whether it was worth doing this type of ride…. After all I wear underpants and ride mountain bikers for gosh sake !#!! not panties and riding a road bike – But let me tell you that the thought and motivation as to who and what I was doing it for, forced me to get up at  4 am to clock yet another two and a half hour ride and over two hundred kilometres on a Fridays and Saturdays. To say that my bike is now a part of my anatomy would be an understatement !.

Where do you come in ? like we all do for one another when an event like this takes place …. Help ….. in the form of sponsorship and donations to such a worthy and honourable cause. Imagine being in a position where you are frail, suffering and unable to afford the care you desperately need. Truly we do not comprehend half the time just what a privilege we have in even just being able to afford the internet etc that enables us to receive an e mail such as this, or to be able to afford a doctor or medication etc

Again thank you to those that have so generously given, it is very much appreciated and to those of you still doing so a very big thank you – You are the people that will keep this initiative going from year to year…

Attached please follow the link to donate online in a safe secure mannor Doit4Charity …. Go ahead take the time and be part of making a difference in this community we call home.

I would appreciate that you send a proof of payment to either 039 3150139 or fax to e mail 086 5303814 thus we can send you a letter of thanks and appreciation.

You will also be kept up to date via twitter http://twitter.com/DURACYCLES

Thanks again

Regards

Mark Bolton

Ilovo Eston MTB Challenge

With a huge turn out at this years Ilovo Eston MTB Challenge they are now rated the biggest one day MTB Race in SA. Go KZN MTBiking.

Well done to all Bundu Bashers who took part. We had a good number of riders and some impressive finishing times.

In the ladys Half Marathon Hayley Smith of team Bell crossed the line in 1st place, followed by Nicola Freitas of team Dura Cycles in 2nd. Evan Van Der Spuy had an unlucky day on the bike with bike problems after a wipeout and ended up finishing 4th.

In the Marathon, James Reid was the 1st Bundu home, finishing 3rd over all. He is certainly peaking at the right time for World Champs coming up in Canada where I'm sure he will do very well. Candice Neethling came home in 2nd in the ladies with a great tussle for the title with Charise Taylor. Natashka Mowat had a great ride, finishing 3rd in the Vet Ladies.

There will be the normal ride from Dura Cycles this Thursday at 4:15pm.  Saturday we will have three mountain bike groups going out as well as a mountain bike group doing on a longer ride as training for the Hill to Hill.  This longer ride will be around 50km.
